Multi-sensory landscape design

Touch

As experts in landscape design, we know a variety of textures do wonders to provide extra layers of sophistication to any landscape. Imagine the smoothness of the silky wet stones in your rock pool, contrasting with the prickly edge of your blue agave plant. Or the soft sway of your chinese silver grass against the roughness of your rustic brick wall. It’s incredibly important to consider touch and texture in landscape design.

Sound

The noises of nature bring peace to our soul. There’s nothing like sitting in a beautiful garden and hearing nothing but birds chirping or leaves swishing in the breeze or water trickling gently from a fountain. If you love the sounds of nature as much as we do, we can build this into your landscape designs, crafting hardscape structures that will bring joy to your auditory senses and choosing plants that will add to the tranquil soundscape.

Smell

The delightful scents of our gardens will encourage deep inhales. We will work with you to ensure we design your garden aroma to your taste. Imagine the joy as you move around your outdoor space to encounter the smells of lavender, jasmine and honeysuckle. Any landscape architect must carefully consider the placement of plants to ensure the fragrances can be properly enjoyed.

Sight

First we must identify the desired style for your bespoke garden; A formal estate embodied by geometric flower beds? Cottage gardens with an abundance of overflowing flowers and herbs? Japanese gardens?  A more contemporary design? We can consult you on the truly vast array of approaches available and inspire you as much as needed. The colour palette is at the heart of any design. The atmosphere will be entirely transformed depending on whether you choose a vibrant array of well-balanced colours or a more subtle, serene palette of muted purples and blues, for example. A vital influencer of colour, is, of course, the impact of light & shadow, and the seasons, which will create an ever-evolving atmosphere. Our plans will incorporate lighting design to ensure your landscape is just as stunning at night time. Of equal importance, we design the style and formation of architectural elements and consider how we can soften these hardscape structures with a blend of nature. Intelligent spatial understanding is crucial to create an engaging landscape - we produce ‘multi-level’ designs whereby plants and structures are crafted to reach varying heights, that complement each other and balance the overall aesthetic of the garden.

Taste

Perhaps you desire a vegetable patch for self-sufficient living. We can design the perfect environment for growing root vegetables, leafy greens, tomato plants and so on. Or perhaps you would like us to incorporate a bush of blackberries into your landscape design, or an apple tree.. We can advise on all types of edible garden features with our expertise.

What happens before the design?

1. Brief

At the start of the process, we first aim to understand your brief - what are your needs and desires for your landscaping project. We will gather the answers to questions such as:

  • What is the outdoor space used for? What are all the different ways you want to enjoy your space? How should the space function?
  • How far have you developed your vision for the garden or outdoor space, so far? Do you have very specific hopes or is this a more open brief?
  • Do you have a particular style in mind for this natural environment? Do you have expectations of any particular garden features or structures to be installed? Do you have expectations of any particular plants or colours to be a focal point?
  • What are your likes and dislikes? Do you have a strong connection with any particular plants? What fragrances do you enjoy most?
  • Do you desire a low-maintenance garden? Or will you have time for upkeep and plant care?

2. Site inspection

This site inspection is necessary to make sure we have a full understanding of the considerations we will be working in when we provide our landscape services to you. We analyse your soil, water drainage, sunlight exposure, current plants and outdoor structures, and overall topography, as this will have an influence over the decisions we make in our designs.
